Fast forward to 2013 and Caitlin is discovered outside their beautiful burning home in an exclusive suburb of New York. She is hysterical and calling for her son Benjamin. But it soon becomes clear that there is something much bigger happening than a tragedy involving a missing child.
As always Overington has shone a spotlight on issues that many people do not know much about, either through lack of interest or because they would rather not burden themselves with some harsh realities. Can You Keep A Secret focuses on several things, but mainly on the challenges of international adoption. Most of us would assume it brings only joy to both the adoptive parents and the child rescued from a life of poverty and hardship. Yet through Caitlin and Colby's experiences it is clear that this certainly does not always happen.
While I did not really care for either of the main characters, I understand that this is probably intentional for the story to work as well as it does. In saying that though, Caitlin and Colby are well drawn and three dimensional.
Yet again the author has crafted a novel of suspense and intrigue and has retained the easy to read style that draws the reader in and keeps them hooked through each twist and revelation, until the conclusion I just did not see coming.
