Jaye Ford carefully weaves past and present elements into the plot and skilfully increases the suspense at a gradual pace - enough to keep you fully engaged but not so much to leave you exhausted. There are enough threads to keep you well and truly guessing but not so many as to be confusing and cluttered.
I enjoyed the regional Australian setting and thought all the characters were well drawn and very true to life. Rennie in particular was a fascinating woman - strong and resilient but also vulnerable at times. Any woman who has been in any kind of abusive situation will no doubt identify with her and understand the way she thinks and acts.
All in all this was a compelling psychological thriller that kept me well and truly turning the pages at an increasingly frantic rate as it reached it's stunning conclusion.
